Cannabis dosage guide

The complete guide to finding your ideal cannabis dose — how to measure, how to adjust, and why 'start low, go slow' is the most important rule for every user.

This guide is for educational purposes only. Cannabis is illegal in the UK without a medical prescription. Always consult a healthcare professional before making decisions about cannabis use.

The golden rule of cannabis consumption is simple: start low, go slow. This applies whether you're a complete beginner or a returning user after a tolerance break. Everyone's endocannabinoid system is different — your ideal dose depends on your body chemistry, metabolism, tolerance, and the specific product you're using.
Start here: 2.5-5mg THC for edibles, one small puff from a vape (1-2 second draw), or 2.5-5mg THC from a tincture. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more with edibles, or 15-30 minutes with inhalation or tinctures.
The consequences of ignoring this rule range from mild discomfort (anxiety, dizziness, paranoia) to full-blown panic attacks and vomiting (particularly with edibles). These experiences are not dangerous in a medical sense, but they are highly unpleasant and can put you off cannabis entirely.
CBD is more forgiving — you can take more without the same risks — but it still follows a bell-shaped response curve. Taking excessively high doses of CBD can reduce its effectiveness for some people. Start with 10-25mg and adjust from there.
Body weight and metabolism: People with higher body weight or faster metabolisms may need slightly more to feel effects. However, the difference is much less pronounced with cannabis than with alcohol — a person's individual endocannabinoid sensitivity matters more.
Tolerance: Regular use builds tolerance. If you use cannabis daily, you'll need more to achieve the same effect. A 2-4 week tolerance break (T-break) can reset your sensitivity. Occasional users (1-3 times per week) maintain a much lower tolerance.
Consumption method: Inhalation delivers THC directly to the bloodstream via the lungs — onset is fast (seconds to minutes) and the peak is sharp. Edibles are processed through the liver, converting THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is more potent and longer-lasting. This is why edible doses should be much lower than inhaled doses.
Empty vs full stomach: Taking edibles on an empty stomach leads to faster onset and stronger effects. Food — especially fatty foods — can slow absorption but may also increase the total amount of THC absorbed. A light meal 30-60 minutes before edibles gives the most consistent results.
Edibles are the easiest method to overdose on because of the delayed onset. You consume a dose, feel nothing for 30-90 minutes, and the temptation to take more is strong. By the time the first dose peaks (2-3 hours), it's too late to undo a second dose.

THC Edible Dose Ranges

  • Beginner (2.5-5mg): Mild relaxation, slight mood elevation. No impairment for most people.
  • Standard (5-10mg): Noticeable high, altered time perception, mild euphoria. Some impairment of coordination.
  • Strong (10-20mg): Intense high with significant impairment. Not for beginners.
  • Very strong (20-50mg+): Only for experienced users with high tolerance. Risk of anxiety, paranoia, and vomiting.
CBD edibles follow a different scale. Standard doses range from 10-50mg CBD. Start at the lower end and increase by 10-25mg until you find the relief you're looking for. CBD gummies from reputable UK brands typically contain 10-25mg each.
Inhalation (vaping or smoking) gives you much more control over your dose because effects are felt almost immediately. The key is to take one small puff, wait 5-10 minutes, assess how you feel, and then decide whether to take another.
Beginner inhaled dose: One small puff (1-2 second draw) from a vape set to 170-185°C. Mild relaxation and subtle mood lift. If you have a dry herb vape, load 0.1-0.2g of low-THC flower (5-10%).
For medical patients using prescribed flower, your doctor will specify a starting dose. A common starting point is 0.1g of a balanced THC:CBD strain, vaporised in one sitting. Adjust based on symptom relief rather than intoxication level.
Higher temperatures (190-210°C) release more cannabinoids and produce thicker vapour but also more throat irritation. Keep temperatures lower for a smoother introduction and cleaner flavour. Baked & Rated has detailed reviews of vaporisers with precise temperature control.
Tinctures and oils offer precise dosing via a graduated dropper. This makes them one of the best options for beginners who want control without inhalation.
To use a tincture: fill the dropper to your desired dose, squeeze the liquid under your tongue, and hold it there for 60-90 seconds before swallowing. Sublingual absorption bypasses the digestive system for faster onset (15-45 minutes).
THC tincture starting dose: 2.5-5mg (usually 0.25-0.5ml of a 10mg/ml tincture). CBD tincture starting dose: 10-25mg (0.5-1ml of a 500-1000mg bottle). Balanced 1:1 tinctures: start with 2.5mg each of THC and CBD.
If you swallow the tincture immediately instead of holding it under your tongue, the onset will be much slower (45-90 minutes) and more similar to edibles. This is not wrong — just be aware of the difference and plan accordingly.

Quick Questions

You'll likely feel anxious, dizzy, paranoid, or nauseous. Stay calm, drink water, eat something, and lie down in a quiet space. The effects will pass. Black pepper contains beta-caryophyllene which can help reduce THC-induced anxiety.
Yes. Regular use leads to tolerance. Daily users need significantly more to feel effects. A tolerance break of 2-4 weeks will reset your sensitivity.
For inhalation: 5-10 minutes between puffs. For tinctures: at least 2 hours. For edibles: at least 2-3 hours, ideally 4 hours to be safe.
Yes. A microdose of THC (1-2.5mg) produces subtle effects — slightly improved mood, mild relaxation, without significant impairment. Many medical patients use microdosing to function normally while getting symptom relief.
