How to Store Cannabis Properly

Cannabis storage

Keep your cannabis fresh, potent, and flavourful with proper storage — temperature, humidity, light protection, and the best containers for flower, edibles, and concentrates.

This guide is for educational purposes only. Cannabis is illegal in the UK without a medical prescription. Always consult a healthcare professional before making decisions about cannabis use.

Proper storage is essential to preserve the potency, flavour, and freshness of your cannabis. Improperly stored cannabis can lose significant potency within weeks as THC degrades into CBN (cannabinol), which is less psychoactive and more sedating.
The three enemies of cannabis are: oxygen (causes oxidation and degradation of cannabinoids), light (UV rays break down THC and terpenes), and heat (accelerates all chemical degradation processes). High humidity causes mould, while low humidity makes flower dry and harsh.
Well-stored cannabis can remain potent and flavourful for 6-12 months. Poorly stored cannabis can become harsh, weak, and unpleasant within 1-2 months. If you buy in bulk or grow your own, proper storage is essential.
CBD products also degrade over time. CBD oil should be used within 6-12 months of opening. Gummies and edibles have shorter shelf lives due to food ingredients. Check expiration dates and store according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Glass jars with airtight seals (Mason jars) are the gold standard for flower storage. They're non-reactive, don't impart flavours, and provide an excellent seal. Avoid plastic containers — plastic can build up static charge that attracts trichomes (the resin glands containing cannabinoids).
UV-protected glass jars (amber or cobalt blue) are even better as they block light while allowing you to see the contents. Store these in a dark cupboard or drawer for maximum protection.
For long-term storage (3+ months), vacuum sealing removes oxygen that degrades cannabinoids. Vacuum-sealed flower stored in a cool, dark place can remain potent for 1-2 years.
Avoid: plastic bags (static, permeable, crush flower), prescription bottles (not airtight enough), and any container that lets light in. Do not store cannabis in the refrigerator or freezer unless vacuum-sealed — moisture and temperature fluctuations cause mould or trichome breakage.
Temperature: 15-21°C is ideal. Above 25°C accelerates cannabinoid degradation. Below 10°C can cause condensation when the container is opened, leading to mould risk. A consistent temperature is more important than the exact temperature.
Humidity: 55-62% relative humidity is the sweet spot. Below 55%, flower dries out and becomes harsh. Above 62%, mould becomes a risk. Use Boveda or Integra Boost humidity packs (58% or 62%) to maintain ideal humidity automatically.
Light: Store in complete darkness. UV light degrades THC and terpenes within hours of direct exposure. Even indirect light causes gradual degradation. Amber glass helps, but a dark cupboard is best.
Air: Minimise air in the container. Oxygen causes oxidation. Use smaller containers for smaller amounts rather than a large jar with lots of empty space. Open the jar only when needed, not for daily 'checking.'
Flower: Glass jar with airtight seal, 58-62% humidity pack, stored in a dark place at 15-21°C. Whole buds keep longer than ground flower — grind only what you'll use within a few days. Break up buds by hand rather than cutting with scissors (which damages trichomes).
Edibles: Store in a cool, dark place in their original packaging or an airtight container. Gummies last 6-12 months. Baked goods last 1-2 weeks at room temperature, longer in the fridge. Chocolate should be kept at 15-18°C — too warm and it melts, too cold and it blooms (white discolouration).
Concentrates and waxes: Store in silicone or glass containers in a cool, dark place. Some concentrates are best refrigerated — check the product label. Keep away from heat and direct light. Most concentrates degrade faster than flower.
Tinctures and oils: Store upright in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. The dropper should not touch your mouth to avoid contamination. Most tinctures last 1-2 years unopened, 6-12 months after opening. If the oil changes colour or smells off, it may have gone rancid.

Quick Questions

Freezing is not recommended for long-term flower storage. Freezing makes trichomes brittle and they break off easily. For very long-term storage (1+ years), vacuum seal and freeze only if you have no alternative.
Look for mould (white or grey fuzz), a musty or ammonia-like smell, or discolouration. If it smells like hay or grass instead of its original aroma, the terpenes have degraded. Bad cannabis should be discarded.
Generally no. Refrigerators have humidity fluctuations that can cause mould. A cool, dark cupboard or drawer at 15-21°C is better. Only use refrigeration for vacuum-sealed long-term storage or specific concentrates.
Properly stored flower stays fresh for 6-12 months. After 12 months, potency and flavour gradually decline. CBD and THC both degrade over time, but good storage significantly slows this process.
